Dental implants replace missing teeth by surgically implanting a titanium root that is placed into the jawbone. After a healing period, an artifical tooth is placed over it. Implants feel, look and act just like natural teeth. After implants are placed by our Valley Stream dentist, the patient is given a healing period of two to three months, during which time only soft foods can be eaten so that the implant can fuse with the bone. Implants are stronger than the natural root of a tooth and never need fillings or root canals.They also help retain the facial structure and prevent further bone deterioration. Once the implant site has healed, an artificial tooth, or crown, is placed over the implant to protect the area. The artificial tooth looks and functions exactly like a real tooth.
During your initial exam, our Valley Stream dentist will ask for your dental and health history and you’ll receive a comprehensive oral exam. Dental implants consist of two surgical procedures. The first procedure to place the implant is a short process and can be done in our offices. Four to six months later, the second procedure will take place in which we plant the artificial tooth over the site. The entire procedure takes around three to four months, however there is little disruption to the patient’s lifestyle.
