An extraction is a procedure that is done if there’s a problem with the tooth or if decay has rotted a tooth to the point of no return. Sometimes extractions are done if the mouth is crowded with too many teeth, or to make room for wisdom teeth to grow in, or for braces. At Contemporary Dental Implant Centre, we do Midtown extractions for patients who need them. This can be done by appointment or for emergency extractions.
Midtown Extractions
Cavities are one of the main causes of Midtown extractions. Cavities can get worse and create tooth decay to the point where the root becomes damaged, at which point either a root canal or extraction is needed. Most toothaches or cavities start with tooth pain. Throbbing, swelling, soreness around the tooth, sensitivity to hot and cold, and facial pain are all signs that you may be suffering from a cavity.
The reason that hot and cold sensations make the mouth sensitive is because the cavity creates a hole in the tooth, and anything getting inside the hole can create pain when the tooth is exposed. Sometimes impacted wisdom teeth can cause a toothache, at which point we will assess whether or not the wisdom teeth should be extracted yet or not.
Extractions are only done if absolutely needed. Teeth should be saved whenever possible, such as is the case with root canal procedures. A root canal procedure is a process in which the diseased pulp is removed from inside the tooth before sealing it and placing a crown over it. This helps us save the tooth and prevent it from being extracted. Midtown extractions can be done in our offices quickly and easily, with minimal drugs. We provide a local anesthetic to numb the mouth first, and the extraction itself is quick and painless.
