Bone grafting is a procedure that can be done in order to place dental implants for patients with inadequate bone or gum structure. When there is not enough bone or gum to perform an implant procedure, a bone graft procedure using the patient’s own bone can add enough structure in order to support the implant. At Contemporary Dental Implant Centre, our dental office in Smithtown can perform bone grafting in a routine procedure that requires a short hospital stay.

Dental implants are a revolutionary new way for patients to once again have the luxury of a full set of teeth. Unfortunately, for many patients, where teeth are missing the jawbone eventually becomes atrophied or reabsorbed, leaving insufficient bone to place the implant. The quality and quantity is compromised, leaving the patient without option to become a candidate for dental implants. Fortunately, major and minor bone grafting now gives patients the option to have dental implants. At our dental office in Smithtown, we can obtain bone from a tissue bank or from bone taken from the patient’s jaw, hip or tibia. A major bone grafting  procedure is usually done to repair any defects that the jaw has suffered. The defect may be a result of a congenital defect, or from injury or tumor surgery.

At our dental office in Smithtown we also perform sinus lift procedures, ridge expansion and nerve repositioning. Sinus lifts are done if there is a case where the sinus wall is too thin to place dental implants inside the bone. The sinus lift procedure allows our dentist to go in through the sinus area, placing donor bone into the floor of the sinus. After a healing period, the bone fuses to the patient’s sinus area, allowing enough area for an eventual implant to be placed. In the case of ridge expansion, if the ridge has been reabsorbed, a bone graft may be done to increase the ridge height or width. It helps to restore the lost bone dimension if the jaw ridge is too thin to place regular implants into. The ridge of the jaw is expanded mechanically, allowing bone graft material to be inserted.
